What is Forlorn Moon?

Forlorn Moon is a hand-painted clothing brand, anchored by the recurring character of a sad, lonely moon, and telling the story of it sinking into melancholy. There are also a variety of other pieces outside of the moon motif, branching into a variety of practices and design styles. We hope you enjoy.

The Moon rises into the sky, feeling alone, illuminating a relatively barren landscape.  Seeing it in such distress, its friends (other planets and celestial figures) come to comfort The Moon, but to no avail.  Despite feeling so lonely, so unsure of its place, The Moon refuses this comfort and instead floats higher, seemingly wrapped up in the comfort of its own melancholy.

This collection aims to consider, in a whimsical fashion, the nature of loneliness and unwillingness to change one’s circumstances, even if the “obvious solution” may be knocking at one's door.  While not a particularly healthy tendency, it is not uncommon, and the figure of a lonely, Forlorn Moon captures the essence of this emotion and proclivity quite well.

On to the functional details of the collection:  These clothing pieces are hand-painted (aside from some tees).  I have been hand-painting clothing for a little over 5 years now, and it is a practice which I love dearly.  Not only the greater freedom in design it affords you, but also the care and attention required have led me to this love, and to study the craft in an effort to provide the highest-quality clothing possible to my clients.

To answer a few questions quickly:

  1. Are these clothes durable?  Painted clothes are in fact sturdy!  I use a specific set of mediums, chemicals, and treatments to make sure these pieces last.

  2. How do I care for them?  Most pieces are able to be machine-washed (on cold!), and all pieces are waterproofed, heat-treated, and otherwise prepared to handle harsh conditions and be washed.  The main thing to remember is to avoid high temperatures, as this will degrade the paint.

  3. How long does it take to make them? To put it simply, a long time. Hat patches take me about 25 minutes to paint, jackets several hours, and other pieces somewhere in between. All these pieces are my babies, and I will always prefer to create pieces by hand.
